Most organisations bought Citrix Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud (UHMC) to keep delivering virtual apps and desktops. Many are using only a fraction of what the subscription includes. That's a missed opportunity, because UHMC bundles capabilities that many IT teams are still paying other vendors for.
The question isn't what you could cut. It's what you could switch on.
What UHMC actually is
Citrix introduced UHMC in March 2024 as a single subscription that replaced the separate Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) and Citrix DaaS offerings. One licence lets you run Citrix on-premises, in Citrix Cloud, or across both in a hybrid model, and you can move workloads between them without changing licences.
Every UHMC licence is Premium edition, so there is no trade-off between the features you want and the edition you can afford. Everything is available to every user.

Five ways to get more from your subscription
1. Put NetScaler in front of everything, not just Citrix. NetScaler is often deployed only as the gateway for Citrix sessions. Under UHMC you're entitled to deploy it much more widely: load balancing internal and customer-facing apps, web application firewall protection, and dedicated instances for high availability, disaster recovery and test environments. Many organisations can consolidate standalone load balancers or cloud-native load-balancing services onto NetScaler, with one codebase across on-premises and every major cloud.
2. Replace your VPN with Secure Private Access. In March 2026, Citrix expanded the SPA entitlement for UHMC customers to cover broader Zero Trust Network Access and VPN replacement use cases, with no action needed to activate it. That means app-level, least-privilege access for employees, contractors and partners, including from unmanaged devices, while you phase out traditional VPN at your own pace.
3. Use XenServer where it makes sense. For organisations facing difficult hypervisor renewals, XenServer Premium is already part of the bundle. It's a natural fit for hosting Citrix workloads and can reduce dependence on a separate hypervisor licence.
4. Bring device management into the same platform. Citrix Endpoint Management lets you manage mobile devices and apps alongside your virtual workspace, with one vendor relationship and one support path.
5. Go hybrid without re-licensing. Because UHMC covers on-premises and cloud equally, you can burst into public cloud for seasonal demand, stand up disaster recovery in a second location, or move a workload to Citrix Cloud without a new purchase.
A practical adoption roadmap
- Map your entitlement. List what's included in your UHMC subscription and what you currently use.
- Find the overlap. Identify other vendors' products that do the same job, such as load balancers, VPN, hypervisors and MDM, and when their renewals fall.
- Prioritise quick wins. Start with capabilities that need little change, such as NetScaler HA and DR instances or SPA for a contractor group.
- Pilot and prove. Run each new capability with one team or app before a wider rollout.
- Retire the overlap. Let duplicate products lapse at renewal once the Citrix capability is proven.
